My interest in heirloom imagery is represented through realistic portraiture
and historic landscapes.
Technique:
I prefer a fairly oily charcoal. The vine and less compacted brands
are too messy and not nearly black enough. When I work, only the black's
require direct contact between the charcoal & surface. Instead,
I create a sort of paper palette; lifting the charcoal particles and
applying them with a tortillon. My “edges” are created where light
touches dark and I avoid “line” drawing except in the beginning stages
of my work. I spend alot of time blending and layering until I’m satisfied.
Using a kneaded eraser, I have full control of my highlights and if
I’ve planned well and preserved the white areas, it’s the most satisfying
close to finishing a piece. I rarely “fix” my work unless flattening
it serves an effect for the final.
I hope you’ll enjoy them. I welcome your thoughts and observations.
