Silver Gelatin Prints...

The use of charcoal and it’s absence of color provides a superior translation for these reproductions.

Silver Gelatin prints are made directly from a negative of the original charcoal painting. The negative is created with a flat field Schneider Repro-Caron 4x5 with polarizing light. Each piece is printed on an archival fiber base, then mounted on 2ply rag board and signed by the artist.

Lithographs and other offset printing techniques use plates made from a negative or transparency of the original work. The plates lose definition with each pass or print which is why the first numbered in a series is most valuable.

Compared to pigments and paper, silver and cotton fiber create a stable medium that will not fade or deteriorate over time. Each print maintains its integrity and definition equal to the first.

Limited Edition Prints...

In order to recreate the subtle gradations that occur through the layering of charcoal, I chose to experiment with subtle additions of color.

The use of IRIS digital and Matchprint III and analog proofs created depth in the shadow areas. A second black ink separation, manual reduction of process colors, and metalic separations further targeted the midtones and highlights to enhance contrast. The resulting 6-color Komori Lithrone with aqueous coater is an excellent sampling of the original works.
